How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take in Dallas? A Real 8-Week Timeline
A drywall-in kitchen remodel in Dallas runs 3–5 weeks. Our down-to-the-studs Oak Cliff kitchen took 8 weeks from demo to done, including a damaged oven and a late countertop change.

A kitchen remodel in Dallas takes about 3–5 weeks when the work stops at the drywall: new cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring and lighting, with no layout or plumbing changes. When the kitchen comes down to the studs, it takes longer. Our recent Oak Cliff kitchen took 8 weeks from demo to done, and two surprises we didn't plan for (a damaged oven and a late countertop edge change) added 10 days and about a week.
For perspective, homeowners in Houzz's study of 2019 projects reported kitchen construction averaging 4.5 months. The biggest factor in your timeline is which of the two kinds of remodel you're doing.
Two kinds of kitchen remodels, two timelines
| Down to the drywall | Down to the studs | |
|---|---|---|
| What's new | Cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring, light fixtures, switches, outlets, under-cabinet lighting | All of that, plus layout, framing, plumbing and electrical changes |
| Layout or plumbing moves | No | Yes |
| Timeline | About 3–5 weeks | Our Oak Cliff kitchen: 8 weeks, demo to done |
If you like where your sink, range and walls are, a drywall-in remodel gets you a new kitchen fast. If you want to move things around, open a wall or add plumbing like a pot filler, you're in the second column, and your schedule should reflect that.
The Oak Cliff kitchen: what we built
This kitchen, on Timbergrove in Oak Cliff, was part of a whole-home remodel. It came all the way down to the studs. We rebuilt it with layout improvements, structural framing, new plumbing, drywall, hardwood floors and a full lighting plan.
The finishes were premium:
- J&K cabinetry, custom painted to a specific color
- Calacatta Gold marble countertops
- Ann Sacks tile backsplash
- A Thermador appliance package, including a built-in double oven
- A pot filler, a wine bar and a large island with seating
You can see the full project, including the budget, on the Dallas kitchen remodel project page.
Where the 8 weeks went
| Item | Time |
|---|---|
| J&K cabinets arriving | 2 weeks |
| Custom paint on the cabinets | 7 more days |
| Damaged built-in oven, waiting on the reship | Added 10 days |
| Ogee countertop edge chosen after measuring | Added about a week |
| Permit | Already in place under the whole-home permit |
The cabinets. J&K had the cabinets to us in 2 weeks. Because the homeowner wanted a specific color, they went to our painter for another 7 days. Custom paint is worth it when you want an exact color, but count that week in your schedule.
The oven. The built-in oven arrived damaged, and we had to wait for the replacement built-ins to be reshipped. That added 10 days.
The countertop edge. After the countertops were measured, the homeowner decided on an ogee edge profile. It was an additional charge and added about a week. Luckily, we knew about the change before the countertop install was scheduled.
These are the everyday surprises that stretch a kitchen timeline, and they're why we give homeowners straight answers about schedules up front.
Permits and inspections in Dallas
According to the City of Dallas Building Inspection FAQ, nonstructural interior remodeling that doesn't add floor area or change exterior doors or windows doesn't need a permit. Electrical work generally does, and it has to be done by a licensed electrician. Once your kitchen involves framing, plumbing or wiring changes, permits and inspections become part of the schedule.
On the Oak Cliff kitchen, the permit was already in place for the whole-home remodel, so it didn't add time to the kitchen itself. On a standalone kitchen, find out what's required before demo so a permit or inspection doesn't catch your schedule by surprise.
How to keep your kitchen remodel on schedule
- Decide drywall or studs first. It's the biggest single factor in your timeline, so settle it before anything else.
- Make every selection before demo, down to the countertop edge. Late choices are the delays you control. Our ogee edge change cost a week.
- Plan for custom finishes. Custom-painted cabinets added 7 days on this job. Worth it, as long as it's on the calendar.
- Expect one surprise. A damaged appliance, a backorder, something behind a wall. Build a little cushion in and it won't wreck your plans.
