5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a DFW Remodeling Contractor

The questions that separate a smooth remodel from a horror story — what to ask before you sign, and the answers that should give you confidence.

The hardest part of a remodel isn't the tile or the cabinets — it's choosing who you trust to run it. The right questions up front tell you almost everything you need to know. Here are five that matter, and what good answers sound like.

1. "Are you licensed and insured — and can I see proof?"

This is table stakes. You want general liability insurance and workers' compensation, full stop. A reputable contractor hands over certificates without hesitation. If a company gets cagey here, that's your answer.

A good sign: they offer the documentation before you even finish asking.

2. "How do you handle pricing and changes?"

You're looking for a defined scope and a clear process for change orders — in writing, before work starts. The remodels that blow up financially almost always involve fuzzy scope and verbal "we'll figure it out" pricing. Ask how they price the work and how a mid-project change gets documented and approved. (Here's how we approach pricing.)

3. "Who's actually on my jobsite every day?"

Some companies sell you a polished salesperson, then disappear and subcontract everything to whoever's cheapest that week. Ask who manages your project day to day, how trades are coordinated, and how you'll get updates. You want one accountable point of contact — not a phone tree.

4. "Can I see recent work and talk to past clients?"

Photos are easy to fake or borrow. Real proof is a portfolio of their completed projects and clients willing to talk. Look for work similar to yours in scope and finish level. (You can browse our portfolio and read full project case studies with real budgets.)

5. "What does your warranty cover, and for how long?"

A warranty is a contractor telling you how much they believe in their own work. Ask what's covered, for how long, and how you reach them if something needs attention after the job's done. Vague answers here often mean they don't expect to be around. (See our standards and warranty.)

The pattern to watch for

Notice the theme: clarity. Licensing, scope, accountability, proof, and warranty are all just different ways of asking "will you tell me the truth and stand behind your work?" The contractors who answer those questions easily are usually the ones who run clean projects.
